Horseshoe Curve-1961. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8608 and #8607. Both are APS-24MS road switchers built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. In this context, they're pushing a mail & express train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for further assignment. Note: No cabin car! |
