Slope to Works. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 6 June 1965. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8612, #8613, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. All were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8612 and #8613 are AS-24M's rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8612 was constructed in June of 1956, while #8613 was built in August of the same year. They're serving as tail-end pushers on a mixed-cargo freight train that's passing under the 24th Street Bridge on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the helpers will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #8613 and #8606. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company in 1956 and are rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8613 is an AS-24M, but #8606 is an APS-24MS. These two locomotives are pushing a 77-car freight train up the New Portage Branch Line to Gallitzin and points West. The caboose is N-8 #478214. The PRR's WYE Tower is visible in the distance. |

Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8613 and #8657. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8613 is an AS-24M built in 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. #8657 is an AS-18AM built in 1957 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. They are pulling one hopper car and an N-5 caboose up the Alleghenies to Gallitzin and points West. |
